The Royal Palace of Naples is a historic building located in Piazza del Plebiscito where the main entrance is located. It was built starting from 1600 to reach its final appearance in 1858.
It was the residence of the Spanish and then Austrian viceroys, of the Bourbon dynasty and finally, following the unification of Italy in 1861, of the Savoy. Ceded in 1919 by Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy to state property, today it is mainly used as a museum complex, in particular the Royal Apartments, and is home to the National Library.
Between 1651 and 1666, to replace a previous modest staircase, a new staircase was built inside the Palace, in piperno, made by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti: this was defined in 1729 by Montesquieu as the most beautiful in Europe, and is portrayed in the 1790 painting by Antonio Dominici entitled “Royal staircase with the wedding procession of the princesses of Bourbon”.
