San Gennaro is the Patron Saint of Naples, loved and venerated by all Neapolitans in a visceral way. Famous throughout the world for the dissolution of his blood which was collected in two vials on the day of his beheading. For this reason, his figure has always been an object of worship and folklore.
There are those who believe that the phenomenon of the melting of the blood, which it is hoped will be repeated every year on three occasions (the Saturday before the first Sunday of May, 19 September and 16 December) is to be attributed to a miracle and is a harbinger of good luck: popular belief attributes the arrest of the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631 to the figure of the Saint, which occurred during a procession in which his relics were displayed right in front of the active volcano.
